EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP

Thelma Mathamelo-Jiyane is more than ever involved with the education and leadership programmes of the Isaac Makau Primary School.

The school was established in the 60’s with the intention to provide quality education to the Tswana speaking learners residing in Wattville.

Most of the learners come from relatively poor families characterised by unemployment. They reside in the township and the surrounding informal settlements at e Mandleni, E Mlotheni, Harry Gwala and Lakeview.

The school is a No Fee School which means it does not charge school fees. The school has approximately 5% of learners who travel from neighboring towns like Delmore, Angelo and Germiston. These areas are more than 20km away from school. Most of the learners use trains to get to school, but then have to travel about 3km from the station to school.

Isaac Makau has recently been given a Full Service School Status. This means that the school now admits all learners, including learners with mild disabilities, be it physical or intellectually.

Some of the learners in our public schools are experiencing barriers to learning due to socio economic factors. These factors vary from orphans (10%), vulnerable (15%), extreme poverty (30%), and HIV and Aids infected (less than 25 known cases).

Isaac Makau is a public school and thus operates as per the government legislation.  It fully supports and adheres to all Black Economic Empowerment processes.
